On Pregnancy Conception

The human uterus is able to receive young embryos (2, 4 cell-stage and even pronucleated eggs), insure their growth and implantation at a rate that does not exceed, however, 15% for one transferred egg. At the present time in vitro culture to the blastocyst stage, which impairs human embryo viability, should be avoided. If the egg has been fertilised (the process of the sperm fusing with the egg) it will move to the uterus and attach itself to the uterine lining, a process called implantation. The cells are called a zygote. Good sources of folic acid or vitamin B include prenatal vitamins, dark leafy veggies, fruits such as oranges, grapefruits and other citrus, nuts, beans, wheat breads and cereals like Cheerios. These are all excellent sources of folic acid and should become daily parts of your diet.

Rarely, the fertilized egg does not leave the fallopian tube; this is called a tubal pregnancy or ectopic pregnancy and is a danger to the mother. Ova, or oocytes, are the haploid female egg cells, and their role is to fuse with one sperm cell to form a fertilized zygote which will then grow in the uterus to form a developing fetus. These cells are produced by meiosis in the ovaries and stay in a state of suspended animation until activated by hormonal changes in the woman’s menstrual cycle. The fertilized egg (called a zygote) continues to divide as it passes slowly through the fallopian tube to the uterus where its next job is to attach to the endometrium (a process called implantation). First the zygote becomes a solid ball of cells, then it becomes a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst.

Women do not continually produce eggs. This is different from men, who continuously make more sperm. Every human sperm and egg is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, alive. They are not human beings, of course. Sexually mature adult females ovulate (produce eggs) once each month as a part of their normal menstrual cycle. The sperm compete to penetrate the outer membrane or covering of the egg which seals off permanently once a single sperm makes its way inside.

Fertility medications that promote ovulation are a viable solution for certain couples – find out how fertility drugs can help. When the basal body temperature has gone up for several days, one can assume that ovulation has occurred. However, it is important to remember that the BBT chart cannot predict ovulation – it cannot tell you when it is going to occur ! For the home tests that measure LH surge that immediately precedes ovulation, detection of LH occurs at above 30 mIU/ml. This means that women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who have slightly higher resting LH values are still not falsely detected as ovulating.

Disconnection from the pill will permit the reproductive system to go through several normal cycles before you conceive – which will make it easier to establish when ovulation happened. While this is suggested it is best to take necessary precautions. In particular the timing of ovulation during the first cycle is quite unpredictable. So if you were to conceive during that first cycle, the standard method of estimating the start of your pregnancy by the first day of your last period would be unreliable. When do you ovulate?
