Did the MMR Vaccine Affect Your Child?
The JABS group would like the US line of inquiry to form the basis of a British Forum to openly discuss the MMR vaccine issues. British parental concerns are justified in that at present there seems to be a lack of transparency with regard to how vaccination policy is developed and implemented in the UK. Of noted interest, the MMR vaccine is routinely given at one year of age. However, if MMR vaccine is given on the previous day or earlier, the PPD should be delayed for at least one month. Live measles vaccine given prior to the application of a PPD can reduce the reactivity of the skin test because of mild suppression of the immune system.
The MMR vaccine is a mixture of three live attenuated viruses , administered via injection for immunization against measles , mumps and rubella (also called German measles). It is generally administered to children around the age of one year, with a second dose before starting school (i.e. Getting MMR vaccine is much safer than getting any of these three diseases. Most people who get MMR vaccine do not have any problems with it. The MMR vaccine is a three-in-one needle that protects against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). It should be given to children soon after their first birthday and again (or second dose) at 18 months of age.
Vaccine safety experts, including experts at CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), agree that MMR vaccine is not responsible for recent increases in the number of children with autism. In 2004, a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that there is no link between autism and MMR vaccine, and that there is no link between autism and vaccines that contain thimerosal as a preservative.
So with this principle in mind, I have extended it to include the controversy surrounding vaccines .in particular the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine .and autism despite the significant amount of research disproving any association. However, what infuriates me to this day is how the controversy appeared to evolve from a personal agenda rather than good solid scientific research. Would that money and researcher time were applied to actually helping people with autism!!! In a third study gastrointestinal symptoms lasting > 24 hours and occurring from 20 hours to 15 days after vaccination were not a predictor of autism or inflammatory bowel disease. It had previously been postulated that vaccination caused bowel abnormalities through measles infection which increased absorption of non-permeable peptides which in turn resulted in developmental disorders.
A controversy over the use of this combined vaccine began in early 1998, owing to the claims of a UK paediatrician that there was a slight risk of immunized children developing autism in later life. This risk was not present when the vaccinations were given as three separate shots at different times. Nevertheless, No credible evidence of an involvement of MMR with either autism or Crohn’s disease was found, Milder cases are now being considered as autism.
As the MMR vaccine-autism hypothesis has fallen apart, so has the discipline. The site is now much more in line with other anti-vaccine sites. An updated reported two years later shows that autism is in fact rising w/ out thimerosal. So i guess the Grier paper just wasn’t as accurate or up-to-date. The presence of measles virus (MV) RNA in bowel tissue from children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances was reported in 1998. Subsequent investigations found no associations between MV exposure and ASD but did not test for the presence of MV RNA in bowel or focus on children with ASD and GI disturbances.
